What do the words ‘cookies and a glass of milk’ conjure up for you?
For me, they take me back to my childhood days and make me feel warm, secure, comfortable and loved.
Perhaps I am back in my first ever bedroom with teen pop star posters adoringly stuck on the walls with swathes of yellowing cellotape (sorry Mum)!
There is a cherry blossom pink brush on my dressing table which I used to brush my hair with fifty times a night before bed so I would have the hair of a fairytale princess (I’d read this tip in a Jackie Annual so knew it was true), I am sitting wistfully at an old writing desk dreaming of one day becoming a professional writer…
Or perhaps I am sitting around an open fire with my sisters on Christmas Eve waiting in anticipation for Santa to come, and leaving him out milk and cookies for his tireless reindeer.
It is a scene of rose tinted dreams, hope and love.
But hey, let’s stop right there!
That’s enough of the trip down memory lane. For now.
Because you know what? I don’t even like milk or cookies.
But I LOVE the idea of them. I love where they take me. How they make me feel. The gleeful emotions that fire up within me when I nostalgically think of those halcyon days.
And I bet you too have something similar that transports you back in time.
We all do.
Something that speaks directly to your emotions and totally draws you in…bit by bit until you are completely overcome.
And you wish more than anything to feel that way again.
Just a little crumb…anything to reawaken that sensation again.
And guess what? Your readers want that feeling too.
They WANT to buy your product or service.
They WANT for you to be the best thing to happen to them since raspberry cheesecake…sorry…sliced bread.
They WANT to totally love you and be all over you like a hungry child on a hot mince pie.
BUT
Only if you give them a glass of milk and some cookies first.
Because emotions make people act, buy, love. Or ‘eat, pray, love’ if you like.
It’s all the same thing.
Appeal to your readers emotions in your copy and you will have a recipe for success.
Or get the help of the original Christmas cookie monster (that’s me by the way).
I am quite hungry now…so am off to raid the cupboards for something to munch on.
